Michelle's Picks | The Perfect Bed

When I first heard about a bed that could give leg and back massages, I thought, Wait, what?! Sign me up! Of course, I also immediately imagined myself sleeping in the massage chair at my favorite nail salon. Yes, please! So I agreed to partner with the team at Saatva to give this bed a whirl.

Needless to say, the day that the Saatva Zenhaven mattress and Lineal base were delivered to my home, I was so, so, so giddy with excitement that I begged my team to stop working and come lie in bed with me. With eyes rolling and a bit of hesitation, three adults and one puppy proceeded to climb into my new dream machine and pretend to sleep while I tested out all of its fancy functions. The delivery crew watched with amusement.

Test No. 1: The long-awaited Massage setting, which had us all laughy-cry-faced as my dog, Rufus, leapt to the floor barking in disbelief. The entire bed vibrated at a steady hum, providing a white noise that was calming enough to nearly make me forget about testing out the other functions. Test No. 2: The Zero Gravity setting, now my personal favorite, which is designed to make you feel weightless. Test No. 3: The TV setting, which is also perfect for reading or working on a laptop, and will come in handy one day for breastfeeding a baby. To my delight, the Zenhaven also raises and lowers to custom settings. (Sleepless nights no more!) And it even has a handy night-light to illuminate the floor if, for some blasted reason, I get up at three in the morning.

Note that the adjustable mattress and base fit and operate within standard bed frames! I've had this headboard/bed frame for four years and love it, so I was thrilled to learn that the Lineal base and Zenhaven mattress could simply rest inside it like any other mattress.

Bells and whistles aside, the mattress itself is actually what won me over. Known for its health benefits, the Zenhaven is made from 100-percent natural latex, which is harvested from the pure sap of rubber trees. It is hypoallergenic and resistant to mold, microbes and dust mites, and it contains no VOCs (volatile organic compounds) or any of the other harmful chemicals often found in bed foams. Truth be told, that’s what I care about most when choosing a mattress, as I can’t stand the idea of sleeping on something that’s slowly poisoning me and poor Rufus.

The all-natural latex also has an open cell structure that allows air to circulate freely, countering body heat and providing cool, comfortable sleep. It is also designed to improve blood circulation and spinal alignment. The cherry on top is a layer of organic New Zealand wool and organic cotton that wicks away moisture and acts as a natural fire retardant — which, by law, every mattress must have, so why not rely on nature for a chemical-free solution.

Afraid to buy a mattress online without trying it out first? I was too, until I realized Saatva offers a 120-day home trial. So much better than deciding on a mattress in minutes at a traditional store. Also, no more dirty looks from the bed salesman when you invite three friends and your dog into bed for some giggles and a full-power massage.

Above, corner retainers keep the mattress in place as the base articulates to the Zero Gravity setting. (My favorite!)
