In the late ’60s, Lilly Beecher traveled to East Africa and purchased her first Kiondo bag in a small open market in a village. “I still have it in perfect condition,” says Beecher.  “I fell in love with the earthy coloring, the refinement of weaving.” Since the early ’70s, she’s traveled to East Africa at least three to four times a year, and her collection of bags has expanded as a result. But recently, because of the cost of the space to store them, she’s been carefully parting with her cache of totes. “It is difficult to give up any part of a collection, knowing that one will never be made in this wonderful quality,” Beecher says. “And I have known the persons who made them.” The 11 bags acquired by The Maryn range from finely woven Taitas to travel-friendly Baobabs, all of the finest quality. “It is an art, and some of the women were exceptional in their artistry, in the unbelievable tightness of stitches and coloring,” Beecher explains. “The women in the small villages got together in the evening and wove all their dreams and hopes into these bags.”
