Ceramicist Julie Terestman enjoys the challenge of animating an ordinary object with a bit of the humor, awkwardness, and beauty of being human. While her work is often made in series, all pieces are one of a kind. The forms presented here are inspired by a quiet minimalism from sources such as Japanese tea ware and French country ceramics as well as the works of Lucie Rie and Isamu Noguchi. Terestman is interested in the dynamic created through the use of color—sometimes subtle, sometimes bold—on these pieces. Her striped vases—composed of red earthenware with white glaze on the interior and white matte glaze with thin black stripes on the exterior—are inspired by classic jar and bottle shapes.
